Gladiator Rescue

RESCUING ANIMALS SHAPED BY VIOLENCE, EXPLOITATION, AND HUMAN CONFLICT

Gladiator Rescue is a specialized initiative of Namigni Animal Sanctuary focused on the rescue, rehabilitation, sanctuary care, and ethical rehoming of animals historically used in systems of violence, entertainment, control, and exploitation.

As Colombia undergoes historic legal and social changes — including the banning of bullfighting and cockfighting, and proposed restrictions on the use of dogs in private security and public forces — thousands of animals face an uncertain future.

Many of these animals cannot simply be released, abandoned, or adopted into standard homes. They require specialized care, rehabilitation, behavioral understanding, long-term protection, and, in many cases, lifelong sanctuary.

Gladiator Rescue exists to respond to this growing challenge.

For years, Namigni has already been carrying out this work in practice: rescuing fighting bulls and cows, protecting strong-breed dogs with nowhere else to go, and caring for animals discarded by systems that once profited from them. Gladiator Rescue gives structure, visibility, and long-term vision to this mission.

Our approach combines:

  • Animal rescue and rehabilitation

  • Lifetime sanctuary care for non-releasable animals

  • Ethical rehoming whenever appropriate and safe

  • Education and awareness

  • Advocacy for humane transition solutions

  • Collaboration with trainers, veterinarians, rescuers, and animal welfare organizations

We believe that when societies outlaw systems of cruelty, they also have a responsibility to protect the animals left behind by those systems.

Fighting Bulls and Cows

PROTECTING BULLFIGHTING BULLS IN COWS IN A POST-BULLFIGHTING WORLD

Few animals symbolize institutionalized violence more than fighting bulls bred for bullfighting spectacles. Across Spain, Portugal, France, Colombia, and parts of Latin America, these animals have historically been bred and used for entertainment centered around suffering and death.

With the prohibition of bullfighting in Colombia, many fighting bulls and cows face neglect, slaughter, abandonment, or uncertain futures.

At Namigni, we already provide lifelong sanctuary to rescued fighting bulls and cows through our Toro Bravo Reserve initiative. While they are naturally aggressive, these animals are also highly sensitive, intelligent animals who have spent generations trapped within a system that viewed them as disposable commodities.

Our work includes:

  • Rescue and relocation of fighting bulls and cows

  • Long-term sanctuary and pasture care

  • Veterinary treatment and nutritional support

  • Public education about the reality behind Spanish fighting bulls and cows

  • Protection of bloodlines and individuals who would otherwise be killed

Providing sanctuary for fighting bulls is especially challenging due to:

  • Their size and strength

  • Land and infrastructure requirements

  • Long-term feeding and veterinary costs

  • The lack of existing sanctuary models for these animals worldwide

Despite these challenges, we believe these animals deserve dignity, safety, and the chance to live beyond the arena.

Retired Police, Military, and Protection Dogs

SUPPORTING DOGS TRAINED FOR ARMED FORCES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND PRIVATE SECURITY

Across Colombia and many other countries, thousands of dogs are used in:

  • Private security

  • Guard work

  • Military operations

  • Police and narcotics detection

  • Surveillance and enforcement

Many of these dogs spend years in highly controlled, stressful, and demanding environments. When they are retired, displaced, or no longer considered useful, they may face neglect, abandonment, poor rehoming practices, or euthanasia.

New legislation under discussion in Colombia could significantly restrict the use of dogs in private security and reduce their use within public forces, potentially creating a large population of dogs needing specialized placement and care.

These dogs cannot simply be adopted into any household without proper evaluation and preparation.

Gladiator Rescue advocates for responsible and humane transition pathways for these animals through:

  • Rescue and intake support

  • Behavioral evaluation and rehabilitation

  • Partnerships with experienced trainers and handlers

  • Careful screening of adopters

  • Sanctuary placement for dogs unsuitable for rehoming

  • Public education around working dog welfare and retirement

These animals are not machines or disposable tools. They are intelligent, loyal beings who deserve protection after years of service.

Fighting Roosters

HELPING ANIMALS EXPLOITED BY COCKFIGHTING

Cockfighting has long subjected roosters to brutal conditions involving forced combat, injury, isolation, and death for human entertainment and gambling.

As Colombia moves toward banning cockfighting, many birds may face abandonment, mass killing, or continued illegal exploitation.

Gladiator Rescue works to provide humane alternatives for these animals through:

  • Rescue and intake of fighting roosters

  • Rehabilitation and safe housing

  • Veterinary care for injuries and chronic conditions

  • Specialized management to reduce conflict and stress

  • Long-term sanctuary solutions when rehoming is not possible

Rescuing fighting roosters presents unique challenges. These birds are naturally aggressive, and they are also bred and conditioned for aggression, making placement and group integration difficult. Many traditional shelters are not equipped to manage them safely or ethically.

Our goal is not only to rescue individual birds, but also to help create compassionate transition solutions as these exploitative practices disappear.

Strong-Breed Dogs and Rescued Fighting Dogs

GIVING A FUTURE TO STIGMATIZED AND EXPLOITED STRONG DOGS

Pit bulls, American Bullies, Staffordshire Terriers, Dogo Argentinos, Cane Corsos, and other strong-breed dogs are among the most misunderstood and abandoned animals in the world.

Many are:

  • Victims of abuse or neglect

  • Used for illegal fighting

  • Exploited for breeding

  • Abandoned due to fear and stigma

  • Euthanized simply because of their breed

At Namigni, we already provide long-term care for rescued strong-breed dogs who cannot easily be placed elsewhere.

Gladiator Rescue focuses on:

  • Rescue of abused and abandoned strong-breed dogs

  • Rehabilitation and socialization

  • Veterinary care and recovery

  • Responsible adoption and matching

  • Education to combat breed stigma

  • Lifetime sanctuary for dogs requiring permanent care

We believe dogs should be judged as individuals, not condemned because of stereotypes or the actions of humans who exploit them.

Many of these dogs are deeply affectionate, intelligent, and capable of recovery when given stability, structure, and compassionate care.

Leaving the Gladiator Culture in the Past

BUILDING HUMANE TRANSITION SOLUTIONS

Gladiator Rescue is not simply about rescue. It is about addressing the real-world consequences that emerge when societies begin rejecting industries and practices built on animal exploitation.

As laws change, animals should not become collateral damage.

Through rescue, sanctuary, rehabilitation, education, and advocacy, Namigni Animal Sanctuary is working to create compassionate transition pathways for animals who have spent their lives serving systems of violence, entertainment, control, or conflict.

Because every animal deserves the chance to live beyond the role humans imposed on them.

Please consider making a donation today to help Namigni Animal Sanctuary rescue, rehabilitate, and protect the animals that human societies have historically bred and conditioned to be gladiators and that now rely on us to provide them with the opportunity of leading peaceful, safe, and rewarding lives.
