A Hidden Crisis
EXPOSING AND FIGHTING THE DONKEY SKIN TRADE IN COLOMBIA AND LATIN AMERICA
Across Colombia and other parts of Latin America, donkeys are being stolen, abused, trafficked, and slaughtered to supply the growing international demand for donkey skins used in the production of “Ejiao” medicine. This hidden trade has created a devastating welfare crisis for donkeys, particularly in vulnerable rural regions where these animals have historically played an important role in local communities.
At Namigni Animal Sanctuary, we work to expose this reality while building compassionate solutions to protect donkeys from exploitation, slaughter, and trafficking.
Rescuing Vulnerable Donkeys
PROTECTING DONKEYS FROM ABUSE, NEGLECT, AND SLAUGHTER
Many of the donkeys affected by the skin trade suffer from severe neglect, overexploitation, injuries, abandonment, and extreme cruelty before being sold or killed for their skins.
Namigni Animal Sanctuary rescues vulnerable donkeys whenever possible, providing veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, nutrition, safety, and lifelong sanctuary. Our goal is to give these animals the opportunity to recover and experience a life free from exploitation and suffering.

Raising Awareness and Building Solutions
EXPOSING THE REALITY BEHIND THE DONKEY SKIN TRADE
The donkey skin trade remains largely invisible to the public despite its devastating impact on animal welfare and rural communities across Latin America.
Through education, awareness campaigns, storytelling, and outreach, Namigni Animal Sanctuary seeks to shine light on the realities behind the exploitation of donkeys for meat and skin exports. We believe meaningful change requires not only rescue, but also public awareness, international attention, and compassionate alternatives that reduce suffering at its source.
